The streaming unblock rates are mid-tier but acceptable. For a lot of users, Proton VPN is the right “one VPN does it all” answer.
After 3 months of using Proton VPN as a daily driver across multiple devices, here’s the honest review.

Get Proton VPN if: You want privacy + streaming in one product. You’re already in the Proton ecosystem (Mail, Drive, Pass). You want a usable free tier. Swiss jurisdiction matters to you.
Skip Proton VPN if: You only care about streaming (NordVPN dramatically better). You’re a privacy purist (Mullvad better). You want best-in-class app polish.
What Proton VPN is
Proton VPN is a VPN service operated by Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar. Founded in 2017, Proton VPN is open source, Swiss-headquartered, and positions itself around privacy.

The Free tier is genuinely useful. No bandwidth cap, no ads, just country limitations. Best free VPN we’ve tested and recommend often even to non-Proton users.
VPN Plus is the typical paid tier. Unlocks streaming, multi-hop (Secure Core), all countries.
Proton Unlimited is a no-brainer if you’d pay $5+/mo for Proton Mail or Drive separately. For ~$3/mo extra over VPN Plus alone, you get the entire Proton ecosystem.
What’s good
1. Swiss jurisdiction. Strong privacy law, no mandatory data retention applying to VPN providers, outside the 14-Eyes surveillance alliance. Privacy advocates rank Switzerland among the best jurisdictions globally.
2. Audit history. Audited by Securitum in 2023, with full report published. Architecture supports no-logs claims. Subsequent annual audits expected.
3. Secure Core multi-hop. Routes your traffic through hardened servers in privacy-friendly countries (Switzerland, Iceland, Sweden) before exiting to the destination. Slower but defends against VPN-endpoint compromise. Optional — you toggle it per-session.
4. Free tier is real. No bandwidth cap. No ads. Limited to 3 countries (US, NL, JP). Works as a daily-driver privacy VPN if you don’t need streaming or many countries. We recommend Proton VPN Free as the default free VPN for privacy-conscious readers.
5. Streaming Plus tier works for major services. 5/8 in our Q2 2026 testing. Netflix US/UK reliable. BBC iPlayer reliable. Disney+ inconsistent. Disclosure: this is below NordVPN (7/8) and Surfshark (6/8) but acceptable for users who watch a handful of services.
6. Open-source clients. All Proton VPN clients (macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android) are open source. Anyone can audit. This matters for trust — closed-source VPN clients require taking the company’s word.
7. NetShield (their content blocker). DNS-level ad/tracker blocking. Decent but not Pi-hole-level. Three modes: malware blocking only, ads + trackers + malware, all blocking + ads + trackers.
8. Tor over VPN. Routes traffic through Tor network from your VPN connection, without needing Tor Browser separately. Solid extra privacy layer for users who occasionally need Tor.
9. P2P-friendly servers. Marked clearly. Most providers are vague about torrenting; Proton is explicit about which servers allow it and which don’t.
10. Genuine company alignment. Proton AG’s CEO is a vocal privacy advocate, the company is transparent about operations, and they’ve consistently delivered on privacy promises across their product line. This isn’t marketing — it’s documented behavior.
What’s not so good
1. Streaming unblock rates trail NordVPN/Surfshark. 5/8 vs Nord’s 7/8 and Surfshark’s 6/8. Adequate but not best in class. Netflix BR, Netflix KR, Hulu often fail.
2. Speeds slower than the streaming-focused VPNs. Acceptable for 1080p, sometimes throttles for 4K under load. The Secure Core mode is meaningfully slower (multi-hop routing has real cost).
3. App UX is clean but lacks polish. Compared to NordVPN’s app, Proton VPN’s feels more functional than satisfying. Not a dealbreaker. Has improved across 2024-2025.
4. Apple TV / Fire TV app coverage smaller than NordVPN. Native apps exist but features are reduced compared to mobile/desktop. Some advanced features (Secure Core selection, P2P server selection) aren’t available on TV apps.
5. Customer support is email-only. No live chat. Response in 24-48 hours typically. Quality of support is excellent when you get it; speed is the weak point.
6. Plus tier pricing is mid-range. $10/mo isn’t cheap. Surfshark gives you similar streaming for less than half the price.
7. Proton Unlimited bundle locks you into Proton ecosystem. Great if you want to be in that ecosystem (Mail + Drive + Pass + VPN). Wasted spend if you only want the VPN portion.

Comparable to ExpressVPN. Slower than NordVPN on most long-distance routes. Faster than CyberGhost or Mullvad on local routes.
Secure Core mode is slower: typically 40-60% of standard speeds. Worth the trade-off if your threat model justifies it.

Real-world annoyances over 3 months
Daily-use friction points we noticed:
- Reconnection occasionally slow after putting laptop to sleep — the VPN takes 10-15 seconds to reconnect (NordVPN does it in 3-5)
- The macOS app sometimes loses preferred server after updates
- Secure Core mode toggle is awkward to enable — buried in settings
- iOS app’s auto-connect on Wi-Fi works inconsistently with newer iOS versions
- The free-tier promotion banners appear occasionally in the paid tier app — minor but odd
None of these are dealbreakers. Comparable friction to other major VPNs.

NordVPN ($4.39/mo) + Mullvad (€5/mo) = ~$10/mo total. Better at each job than Proton VPN trying to do both.
