Mullvad is the VPN you recommend to friends who actually care about privacy. It’s also the VPN most affiliate marketers don’t recommend, because Mullvad has no affiliate program. After 3 years of using Mullvad as our primary privacy VPN, here’s the honest review.

Rating: 4.7/5 — best-in-class privacy VPN with deliberate tradeoffs.
Get Mullvad if: Privacy is your top priority. You don’t need to stream Netflix from other countries. You want a no-bullshit product.
Skip Mullvad if: You need streaming (it doesn’t work on Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, etc.). You want feature richness.
What Mullvad is
Mullvad is a Swedish VPN provider that has been operating since 2009. They have made privacy the only product positioning, with deliberate refusals to compete on features that compromise privacy.
The product is just a VPN. No “secure browser,” no integrated password manager, no “threat protection” content blocker, no smart-home protection bundle. Just a VPN that does one thing extraordinarily well.
What’s genuinely good
1. Anonymous signup. No email required. No password. You generate an account number (16 digits), and that’s your identifier. You can use Mullvad without ever giving them any personal information.
2. Anonymous payment. Accept credit card and crypto, but also literal cash mailed in an envelope to their office in Sweden. Pay with cash → no link between your identity and your VPN account, even at the payment processor level.
3. No-logs architecture, structurally. Servers run on RAM only. Reboot = data gone. Mullvad has been subpoenaed and raided (Swedish police visited their offices in 2023) — and there was nothing to hand over because there is nothing to retain.
4. WireGuard-first. Mullvad pioneered WireGuard adoption in the consumer VPN space. Open-source, audited, fast.
5. Open-source clients. Every Mullvad client (macOS, Windows, Linux, Android, iOS) is open source. Anyone can audit the actual code that handles your traffic.
6. Daita (network noise injection). A newer feature (2024) that pads your traffic with constant-size packets at constant intervals. Defeats traffic analysis attacks that other VPNs are vulnerable to. Optional because it costs bandwidth.
7. Quantum-resistant tunnels. Mullvad shipped post-quantum cryptography in their WireGuard configuration in 2023, ahead of competitors.
8. The €5/mo flat rate. No “save 80% on the 3-year plan” psychological pricing. €5 per month, every month, period. You can pay monthly forever without losing the bulk discount because there is no bulk discount because the price is fair.
9. Zero marketing manipulation. They don’t run “DEAL!” countdowns. They don’t have an affiliate program. They don’t pay influencers. They don’t bundle dubious add-ons. Their website is information-first.
What’s not so good (the deliberate tradeoffs)
1. Streaming doesn’t work. Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, etc. — all block Mullvad IPs aggressively. Mullvad doesn’t rotate IPs aggressively to evade the blocks because that costs bandwidth and money. For streaming, you need a different VPN.
2. No fancy features. No split-tunneling on every platform (basic on some), no “specialty servers” (no obfuscated, no double VPN). The product is intentionally minimalist.
3. App UX is functional, not beautiful. Compare to NordVPN or ExpressVPN’s polished apps. Mullvad’s app is clean but spartan. This is fine for technical users; some non-technical users find it bare.
4. Customer support is email-only. No live chat. Reply time is 24-48 hours typically. Quality is high but speed is slower than competitors.
5. Smaller server network. ~40 countries vs NordVPN’s 60+. For most users this doesn’t matter. For users in specific obscure countries, it might.
6. Doesn’t work in heavily censored countries. Mullvad does not have obfuscation servers, so it doesn’t work in China, UAE, Iran reliably. Pick a different provider (NordVPN’s obfuscated servers, Astrill) for those use cases.

For local servers (within ~500 miles), Mullvad is among the fastest VPNs available. For long-distance, it’s competitive with NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
Privacy assessment
This is where Mullvad earns its rating.
Jurisdiction: Sweden. Privacy-friendly EU member. No data retention laws applying to VPNs. No 14-Eyes data sharing in the way relevant to user privacy.
Logs policy: “No logs, ever.” Backed by architecture (RAM-only servers), legal structure (no required data retention), and operational history (responded to subpoenas with “we don’t have that”).
Audit history: Multiple audits by Cure53 and Assured AB. Full reports published. Audits cover client code, server infrastructure, and operational procedures.
Real-world test: Swedish police raided Mullvad’s offices in 2023 looking for user data in connection with an unspecified investigation. They left with nothing (publicly reported, no data was found because no data is retained). This is the strongest real-world signal in the VPN industry.
Compare to competitors:
– NordVPN: Audited, but architecture supports more logging than Mullvad’s. Has handed over more in legal cases.
– ExpressVPN: Audited, RAM-only servers. Solid but recent ownership change (Kape) introduces uncertainty.
– IVPN: Equivalent to Mullvad on architecture; slightly less famous.
– Surfshark: Audited, but mass-market positioning + same parent as NordVPN.
Mullvad sits at the top of the privacy ranking and has stayed there for years.
Pricing
€5 per month, flat. No discounts for annual or multi-year. No “lifetime” offers. You can pay:
- Credit card (subject to normal credit card data being captured by the processor)
- Bitcoin or Monero (more privacy)
- Cash, mailed to Sweden (most privacy)
- Bank transfer (EU SEPA)
There is no money-back guarantee in the traditional sense — Mullvad’s argument is that you can cancel any month, so the lock-in is minimal.
Mullvad Browser
Worth mentioning: Mullvad released Mullvad Browser in 2023 — a Tor-style hardened Firefox fork without using the Tor network. It’s an anti-fingerprinting browser designed to work paired with Mullvad VPN.

- Pre-configured for privacy (no telemetry, hardened fingerprint resistance, sane defaults)
- Works with any VPN (or no VPN)
- Better than Brave for privacy, worse than Tor Browser for anonymity

Mullvad vs the competition
Mullvad vs IVPN: Most direct competitor. Both privacy-focused, both no-frills, both with similar architecture. Mullvad slightly cheaper (€5 vs IVPN’s $6), larger network, slightly better-known. IVPN has marginally better app on some platforms. Coin flip; pick on intuition.
Mullvad vs ProtonVPN: Proton is the “more accessible” privacy VPN — works for streaming, more features, freemium model. Mullvad is more architecturally pure. For maximum privacy, Mullvad. For privacy + streaming, ProtonVPN.
Mullvad vs NordVPN: Different products. NordVPN for streaming, ease, and “it just works.” Mullvad for privacy. Use both if you can.
Mullvad vs Tor: Tor offers stronger anonymity (against a state-level adversary) but is much slower. Mullvad is faster and easier to use; less anonymous than Tor against motivated adversaries. Use Tor for highest-stakes work; Mullvad for everyday privacy.
Real-world stack
Most experienced privacy-conscious users we know run something like:
- Mullvad VPN as their primary daily-driver VPN
- NordVPN or Surfshark subscription specifically for streaming (separate subscription, ~$3-5/mo)
- Tor Browser for specific anonymous tasks
- Mullvad Browser + Firefox containers for daily browsing
Total: €5/mo Mullvad + $3-5/mo for a streaming VPN if needed.
Should you get it?
Yes if:
– Privacy from advertisers, ISPs, public Wi-Fi, government surveillance is important to you
– You want a “set it and forget it” no-bullshit product
– You’re willing to use a separate VPN for streaming
– You appreciate companies that don’t manipulate you
No if:
– You want streaming as part of your VPN spend (use NordVPN or Surfshark)
– You want fancy features beyond a clean VPN
– You’re in China, UAE, or Iran (obfuscation not available)
